Abstract: We discuss the dynamical evolution of the galactic disk, especially mechanisms which increase the stellar velocity dispersion of disk stars with age. We present new results on the dynamical interpretation of the velocity distribution of nearby stars. Encounters between stars and massive black holes from the dark galactic corona seem to explain the observations better than encounters with giant molecular clouds. The proposed massive black holes are able to disrupt some globular clusters on a time scale shorter than the Hubble time. This process would offer an explanation for the relative scarcity of globular clusters in the inner parts of M87.
