Abstract: | We determine and discuss the places of formation of 19 nearby classical cepheids. The ages of the cepheids are derived from the theoretical period-age relation which we check by cluster cepheids. The resulting ages of cepheids range from 107 up to 108 years, with a maximum frequency near 5 107 years. The galactic orbits of the cepheids are numerically integrated backwards in time using the present space velocities and positions derived and discussed elsewhere. The spiral field of the density wave proposed by Lin et al. is included in the galactic gravitational field used. The derived birthplaces of most nearby cepheids are in agreement with the predictions of Lin's theory. Most of the nearby cepheids probably originated in the Sagittarius arm and in the Perseus arm. Only the youngest nearby cepheids are not formed within these main spiral arms but are born probably in the local arm. While Lin's theory of density waves describes successfully the places of formation of most nearby cepheids, other interpretations of the distribution of these birthplaces cannot be ruled out. |
