Abstract: After some introductory remarks on the dynamical evolution of the Galactic disk, we review mechanisms which may affect the velocities of disk stars: stochastic heating, adiabatic heating or cooling, and deflections. We present in some detail a dynamical interpretation of the observed velocity distribution of nearby stars by the diffusion of stellar orbits in velocity space. Finally we comment on the stability of the Galactic disk and discuss the consequences of the diffusion process for the orbit of the Sun.
