Abstract: The improvement of a fundamental reference system depends crucially on the methods applied in the analysis of observations. Therefore several methods have been investigated or developed for the determination of systematic differences between observations and the FK4. Presented here are three methods, first, the "Numerical Method" which is a refined version of the conventional "Numerical-graphical Method", second, the "Numerical Method with weighted Smoothing Coefficients", and, third the "Analytical Method" describing systematic differences by analytical expressions in a statistically significant way. This is achieved by the use of Fourier series, Legendre polynomials and Hermite polynomials, and by applying the F-test to the functions. The third method has evolved from an analytical method developed by Brosche and Schwan in which spherical harmonics were used instead of products of Fourier series and Legendre polynomials. All three methods are fully computerized. For a comparison of the Analytical with the Numerical Method and as an example of the format of presentation of results to be applied in the work on the FK5, the parameters of the functions describing the systematic differences Wash2/50- FK4 are given, and, additionally, values of differences are tabulated for each method. Finally, we present, as an aid for the reduction of older observations to the FK4, a subset of the catalogue N30 on the FK4 system denoted by "N30 (Subset on FK4)" together with information on its applicability.
