| Abstract: | This article reviews the gravitational interpretation of the spiral structure of galaxies in terms of density waves. After stating the basic problems to be explained, we describe the theory of density waves in stellar and gaseous disks of galaxies, and discuss the merits and difficulties provided by the concept of density waves for our present understanding of spiral galaxies. |
