Title: On the Escape Rate of Stars from Clusters
Source: Bull. Astron. (Ser. 3) 127-133
Year: 1968
Abstract: Experimental escape rates for six star cluster models (each containing a hundred stars) are obtained by numerical integration of the n-body problem. They are compared with theoretical predictions. The total escape rate for clusters with a realistic spectrum of stellar masses is significantly higher than for equal masses. The escape rate is almost independent of stellar mass. The escapers carry away an important fraction of the kinetic energy of the clusters since the escapers are produced during close encounters rather than through a diffusion process. The effects of the galactic field and of a rapid mass loss of evolving stars are discussed.
