ARIBIB
Astronomisches Rechen-Institut BIBliographical Database for Astronomical References

Basic sources of the ARIBIB-Literature:

The ARIBIB presents references to literature from the remote past until the middle of the year 2000.

For the literature from 1969 onwards, the ARIBIB is based on the information given in the printed bibliography 'Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts' (AAA). The AAA are a publication of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut, Heidelberg, produced in cooperation with the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe FIZ (since 1988) and the Institution of Electrical Engineers IEE (since 1995). The AAA are prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union.
Much of the information given in the AAA is also available on-line in the databases INSPEC and INSPHYS distributed by STN/FIZ and by IEE. In contrast to the ARIBIB, the printed volumes of AAA and the on-line databases INSPEC and INSPHYS contain abstracts.

For the older literature from 1899 until 1968, the ARIBIB is based on the printed bibliography 'Astronomischer Jahresbericht'(AJB). The AJB is a publication of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut, Heidelberg (formerly Berlin).

For the old literature from ancient epochs until about 1880, the ARIBIB is based on the printed bibliographies published by J. C. Houzeau and A. Lancaster and by J. J. de Lalande.

We are also carrying out tests for including bibliographical information on the astronomical literature between 1881 and 1898 into the ARIBIB. This is a long-term project.

Literature presently contained in the ARIBIB:

(1) At present, the ARIBIB contains references to the literature from all volumes of Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts (literature of the year 1969 to literature of the first part of the year 2000) in the Reference format.

(2) Information on the older literature (1968 and earlier) is presently not fully available to us in a machine-readable format:
(a) The literature from 1899 until 1968 (volumes 1 - 68 of the Astronomischer Jahresbericht) is contained in the ARIBIB in different formats, the Image format, the Index format, or the Reference format. We are on the way to include more of the older literature into the ARIBIB in the Reference format.
(b) The literature from ancient epochs until about 1880 contained in the ARIBIB ( J. C. Houzeau and A. Lancaster and by J. J. de Lalande) is given in the Image format.
